Description:

Trip Initiator: Ken Jennings

Trip Description:

This is a primitive weekend camp out and fishing adventure in Shoalwater Bay. It requires a 6 mile paddle to the camping area. Everyone must be able to carry all their gear, food and water needed for the weekend, there will be not planned group meals.

Shoalwater Bay is one of the few bays on the Texas coast that still has some large grass bottom areas which usually hold clear water allowing for sightcasting. Our camping location will allow easy access to San Antonio and Espiritu Santo Bays as well. Shell Bar is approximately 1/2 mile away across the bay.

The weather is more unpredictable this time of year therefore everyone needs to watch the weather forecast and pack the appropriate clothing and gear. The wind will likely be blowing so the wind chill factor needs to be considered since there will be little protection at the camp site.

The island landing is muddy so it is best to wear water boots since sandals will more than likely not stay on your feet. It is not unusual to sink past your ankles and it only gets worse over the weekend.

Skill Level: Advanced

The skill level for this trip is rated as advanced due to the 6 mile paddle, primitive camping and the fact that everyone must be able to carry all their gear for the weekend. The difficulty of the 5 mile paddle depends upon the wind conditions; it varies from easy to difficult.

Leader:  Ken Jennings
