Panther Point
October 21-23, 2016
Leader - Chris Arceneaux
Trip Description:
Weekend campout.
PACK has been going to Panther Point on Matagorda Island for many years and it has consistently been one of the more memorable trips of the year.
Lots of fishing options are available during this weekend campout. Fishing can be good near the campsite, or, if you’re adventurous, you can venture north or south along Matagorda Island to find marsh for redfish and flounder or deeper water for trout.
PACK members will have the option to fish from their kayak or wade fish the firm sandy bottom areas north and south of the campsite.
We will be tent camping on a shell bar. The area allows you to leave your kayak pulled up near the campsite for easy access. There are no shelters, water or restrooms. All food, water and camping gear must be brought to Panther Point via the Skimmer mother boat. The mother boat will deliver us as close as possible to the camping location. It may be necessary to offload the mother boat as far away as 100 yards from our camping destination depending on tides. However, for the past several trips the Skimmer has been able to pull up near the shell bar for unloading. Remember, your personal camping gear may need to be transported via your kayak the final 100 yards, so pack accordingly.
Due to the conditions of the shell bar, it is recommended that extra-long tent stakes be used. To assist in anchoring your tent, small plastic grocery bags can be brought and filled with shell and tied to the corners of your tent. In the past during windy conditions, the long tent stakes, bags filled with shell and filling the tents with provisions has been sufficient to anchor tents down.
The average temperature is 70-85 during the day and can drop to 45-50 degrees at night. The campsite is in the open and is exposed to rain and wind.
Date/Time:
October 21 - meet in parking lot beside Charlotte Plummer restaurant in Fulton at 9am. Load kayaks and gear onto Skimmer for 10am departure. Boat pickup from Panther Point will be noon with return to Fulton at 2pm on Sunday Oct 23.
Costs
More cost information will be provided closer to the time of the trip but an estimated cost is $110 per person (includes tip). But, due to the cost of chartering the mother boat, the following guidelines will be used for this trip.
1 – The Skimmer will only hold a limited number of kayaks so the trip will be limited to 12 people. Therefore, the first 12 people to submit their money and paperwork between August 1 - Sept 15 can make the trip on the Skimmer. Additional members can camp on the island but must provide their own transportation.
Trip payments and signed waivers should be given to trip leader by September 15. A minimum of 10 people are needed for this trip. If fewer than 10 people sign up by Sept 15, the trip will be cancelled and all money returned. Also, if the trip remains on the schedule but is cancelled at the last minute due to poor weather, all money will be returned.
2 – The price for the Skimmer remains at $1000 + $10/person tip. Therefore, the cost is $110 per person ($100 trip + $10 tip). 3 – If more than 10 people sign up for the trip, the price per person will be reduced and excess money will be returned to participants as calculated.
4 – No money will be returned if the trip is completed and participant does not attend.
Exceptions may be made only at discretion of PACK leadership.
5 - Bring check made out to Chris Arceneaux for $110/person to PACK meeting or mail to Chris / 2422 Brookdale Dr; Kingwood, TX; 77339 I will keep a log sheet of participants and payments.
Please note: This payment arrangement has worked for years and there is no need to change.
