PACK History
Paddling Anglers in Canoes and Kayaks (PACK) was established in March 1998 by approximately ten passionate enthusiasts who wanted to share the excitement of Gulf Coast fishing from small boats. We have maintained monthly meetings ever since, beginning at Pecos Jack's Wilderness Furnishings in Sugar Land. From 2001 to 2004, meetings were held at the Red Cross Building on Hwy 59 South in Houston. Starting in January 2005, we moved to the REI store on Westheimer Road in Houston. After approximately four years at REI, our meetings relocated to the Trini Mendenhall Sosa Community Center at 1414 Wirt Rd.
PACK has grown significantly over the years, but our core mission has always remained the same: fostering camaraderie and fun while promoting safe, legal fishing from kayaks and canoes and advocating for environmentally responsible use of marine resources. In April 2001, we sponsored what was then the largest canoe and kayak fishing tournament and BBQ on the Gulf Coast. PACK, in collaboration with TexasKayakFisherman.com, organized an impressive tournament that attracted over 65 anglers and more than 85 total attendees. We continue to organize numerous kayak fishing trips, including weekend excursions to destinations such as Matagorda Island and Goose Island State Parks, Panther Point, and the Padre Island National Seashore. Throughout the year, we continuously plan new paddling and fishing adventures (see our Events page and Photos).
Most of our members primarily fish in saltwater due to Houston's proximity to the bays and Gulf of Mexico. For variety, we also explore the many lakes and rivers throughout Texas. Kayaks have become the preferred vessel choice because they offer superior maneuverability in the frequent coastal winds. Our meetings feature a diverse range of speakers covering fishing and boating topics, as well as social events like crawfish boils and fish fries. However, the main focus remains on planning outings and sharing stories about previous adventures over refreshing beverages. There's truly no better place to learn about kayak fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast.
