Powderhorn Lake is located just south of Port Lavaca, and north of Port O’Connor. It connects to W. Matagorda Bay just below Lavaca Bay. The water depth ranges from about 2-5 feet with numerous sand flats, grassy areas for wade fishing, and marshes with shallow back lakes to explore. PACK has made this trip the last few years in March and the fishing has always been good. Alot of the group will be staying at the Indianola Marina which has all the comforts of home. Expenses/Fees:
Launching your Kayak at the Indianola Fishing Marina is 5.00. Camping and Renting Cabins is available if you book it early enough fees can be seen at the marina website at indianolafishingmarina.com
See the "Top Spot" or "Hook-N-Line" map # F108 – Matagorda Bay. Powderhorn Lake has become popular with many kayakers. The north and south shorelines can be waded. The east pocket of the lake just below the mouth has submerged grass beds and is protected from south and southeast winds. The north shoreline of the pocket is wadable, with a hard, sand bottom. The Powderhorn Ranch Shoreline, between Powderhorn Lake and Port O'Connor, offers excellent fly fishing for trout, redfish, and flounder. It is wadable over submerged grass, and is protected from strong south and west winds. As an alternative to launching from the RV park kayaks can launch at a small boat launch off TX-1289 (the road to Port O'Connor). From there it is an easy paddle south into the shallow Coloma Lake or north through a narrow pass back into the far west end of Powderhorn Lake.
