Powderhorn Lake
March 23 - 25, 2007

Trip Description:

Powderhorn Lake is located just south of Port Lavaca, and north of Port O’Connor. It connects to W. Matagorda Bay just below Lavaca Bay. The water depth ranges from about 2-5 feet with numerous sand flats, grassy areas for wade fishing, and marshes with shallow back lakes to explore.  PACK has made this trip the last two years in March and the fishing has always been good.

Expenses/Fees:

The estimated cost will be as follows:
Tents: $8/night
RV's:  $12/night
Cabin: $17/night
Group Meals Friday and Saturday nights = $3 to $5/per meal

Fishing Options:

See the "Top Spot" or "Hook-N-Line" map # F108 – Matagorda Bay.
Powderhorn Lake has become popular with many kayakers. The north and south shorelines can be waded. The east pocket of the lake just below the mouth has submerged grass beds and is protected from south and southeast winds. The north shoreline of the pocket is wadable, with a hard, sand bottom.
The Powderhorn Ranch Shoreline, between Powderhorn Lake and Port O'Connor, offers excellent fly fishing for trout, redfish, and flounder. It is wadable over submerged grass, and is protected from strong south and west winds.
As an alternative to launching from the RV park kayaks can launch at a small boat launch off TX-1289 (the road to Port O'Connor). From there it is an easy paddle south into the shallow Coloma Lake or north through a narrow pass back into the far west end of Powderhorn Lake.

Powderhorn Trip Report:

The Pack Armada began the Powderhorn trip weekend with 22 folks in attendance.  We had 7 guest in attendance with some being from the Austin and San Antonio areas:  A special welcome to Bob D, Antonio N, Carlos G, Carlos' Guest (sorry, I need to get his name again from you), Andrew D, Joshua P, and  Paul L.  I believe we have some new PACK members from these guest in attendance; i kno we have one for sure and a welcome goes to Bob D who joined PACK this weekend. Folks started arriving around noon on Friday and we were all greeted with winds gusting 25 to 30 mph.  Several us attempted to get to the south shoreline which took a little over an hour to complete.  No fish were caught and we decided to return and get dinner started for the group.  We made the return paddle back in about 20 minutes as our kayaks caught the waves coming back into the cabin's shoreline.  Dinner menu for Friday night was Brisket with all the trimmings including potato salad, ranch style beans, and peach cobbler with Blue Bell ice cream.  All of us ate well and hoped for lighter winds in the upcoming days.  A few of us launched before sunrise and were greeted to a special surprise; being that the TOP-WATER BITE has finally arrived! Andrew D caught a nice fat 22" trout on top-water and I caught 2 undersized slot reds.  Bait was all around and slicks were forming all around us.  As we continued to fish, we began seeing folks paddling across Powderhorn and they began making their ways to the South shoreline and entrances into West Matagorda bay.  The water was holding a deep Trout green color closer to the South Shorelines.  The wind had cooperated for us so that we could paddle efficiently towards our opportunistic destinations. Bruce B hit it big time in Matagorda Bay where he caught on top-water in knee-deep to waist-deep water an impressive stringer that contained 6 trout between 20" to 24" and two red fish between 24" to 26".  He had a trout that he caught that was in the 28" range that jumped out his net and got away, he was sick.  There is always one that gets away!  I caught a 23" trout on top-water in knee deep water on the south shoreline.  Most folks caught fish on Saturday.  Dick M and Lisa B both caught trout, Bob D caught some nice trout drift fishing in his fine "Nigel Dennis" Sea Touring Kayak, Michael E caught a bull red and was spooled by it and it broke off (on this trip there were two that got away), Paul L caught a trout, Ron R caught a Red fish, Joshua P caught his first Red fish, and Joel B caught a Red fish.  Saturday night we were all treated to Ron R's famous Pasta and sauce, along with salad, Italian bread, and brownies with Blue Bell Ice cream.  Sunday we had more favorable lighter winds and I caught two reds on top water just at day light, one was 28" and the other was 24".  Most of us paddled to noon and then went back to get cleaned up and pack up for heading home.  Thanks to all who volunteered by bringing food, I will settle up with you soon.  Please reply to this report, since others would like to hear your tales.  I know I did'nt get a chance to talk to everyone.  Also, if you took pictures please submit them to the Photos section of the PACK website; if you have any questions on how to do this let me know.  I enjoyed the trip.

Tight Lines,
JT
