Kieth Lake / Sabine Lake
July 13-15, 2007
Trip Description:
I have been here a few times and it is one of my favorite places to fish...I have been on several guided trips and always thought this would be great place to kayak. Located on the Texas/Louisiana border, Sabine / Kieth Lakes have proven to be a trophy trout producer over the last several years. The many shallow shell reefs around the lake attract lots of mullet, along with big Trout through January till May (March being a prime month). There are many prime places to locate big schools of Trout and Reds with the lower Louisiana shoreline being one. It has excellent hard mud mixed with small shell reefs. It's a great place to wade.

Directions are forthcoming..I will update this week of 6/24 and will let you know details as we get closer on accomodations.
What to Pack/Bring:
Standard stuff (waders, lunch, snacks & drinks, favorite paddling/fishing gear). If overnighting bring appropriate tent gear, food, etc (see suggested packing list on website - Helpful Stuff).
Fishing Options:
The tentative trip plan is to arrive Friday a.m. and put in at either Causway Bait and Tackle or the Louisianana Public Boat Ramp both on Hwy 82 to fish Sabine Lake or over at Keith Lake. This will give us flexiblity for weather conditions and allow us to fish either Texas or Louisianna waters accordingly (deep and shallow water is accessible), as well as give us protection from any winds. This will allow us to fish some prime areas such as Causway Bridge to Blue Buck Point, Light House Cove, or on Texas side around Pleasure Island Shoreline to Causway Bridge. One prime area is around Blue Point Buck where there are numerous small shell reefs and great wading areas. More details will follow on locations, maps, and an optional overnight camping location (Pleasure Island) for those wishing to stay and fish Sunday too.
Tides:
info will be updated during the week of 6-24

Trip Report: Sabine Lake - Keith Lake
March 19, 2005
What can I say, but we managed to find a window of opportunity over in the Sabine Lake area. Due to winds that came in the mid-week from the cold front, we chose to pursue Kieth Lake, since Sabine Lake's Louisiana Shoreline was chopped up and muddy. Bruce Behrens and I scouted Kieth Lake on Friday. Bruce got there first and I met up with him but by the time I had reached him he already had a limit of reds. I shortly got my limit. I caught 6 reds and Bruce had caught at least 10. By 5pm, we were back and loaded. We headed over to Walter Humphrey State Park and met up w/ Joel Berry, Bob Roesing, Buzz Black, Ron Romeis, and Carleigh Romeis. We had fresh fried red fish for dinner. A few checked out the pier fishing, but nothing was happening. The wind finally died down early Saturday a.m. and we all left to head over to Kieth Lake. Fish were caught by all: Buzz caught two nice reds. Joel caught a nice red. Bruce caught a flounder and i think the only trout for the trip. Ron caught a nice flounder and Carleigh caught a nice red. I caught 3 flounder. Ken and Bob both caught some reds. Craig caught some nice Flounder. The wind cooperated till about 2pm and then steadily got worse by the time we left. The morning was absolutely like a mirror, a trace of wind. By the time we all got back to the park, we had learned that the chance of rain had increased to 70% w/ Thunderstorms. We all decided to pack it in and play it safe, since we had heard strong winds were coming. All in all, i believe everyone had a good time even though the bite on Saturday seemed a little spread out compared to Friday's catch. Welcome to Ron Romeis who attended his first PACK outing this weekend. He brought his daughter along and they both looked like pros out there paddling their fine Tarpon 160's.
Ron's thoughts:
"Thanks very much for the friendly reception shown to me and Carleigh this weekend. I very much appreciate how welcome everyone made us feel. Enjoyed the camp time and fishing time with Buzz, Joel, Bob, Bruce, and you. The fish fry was excellent, can’t beat getting to eat fresh caught redfish when someone else does all the catching, cleaning, and cooking. I thought the location was great for a quick overnighter; less than two hour drive, excellent accommodations, clean campground, and did I mention free… Having Keith Lake as a back up to Sabine worked out very well, even though the fish didn’t cooperate for some of us, the conditions were certainly fishable and the fish were there even if they suffered from a little lockjaw. I look forward to the next opportunity to fish with PACK."
