Trip Description: |
|
Week end camp out. Depending on the weather/wind we have the options to fish numerous coves, flats, points, creeks, islands, grass beds, stump fields, and extensive shoreline from the launch at Jackson Hill Marina. Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish, and sunfish are all available within reasonable paddling distance. The “deer stand” and “Jackson hill” are close by hotspots. This large impoundment is not surrounded by resorts, condos, houses, or people. Jackson Hill Park is within the Angelina National Forest and this area of the lake is not overrun with pleasure craft and jet skis. Habitat in Sam Rayburn consists of submerged aquatic vegetation, standing timber, and flooded terrestrial vegetation. Hydrilla is the predominant plant species, but other native plants are present.
Summer/early Fall (August-September)
Typical summer heat puts the fish on predictable patterns. Early morning topwater bite gives way to Carolina and Texas rigged worms as the fish move to deeper water and shade. Submerged brush piles attract crappie and jigs or live bait are the ticket for these tasty panfish. This area of the lake is also thriving with blue and channel cats. The daily bag limits are 5 largemouth bass, minimum length of 14”,25 white bass, 10” min.,25 blue or channel cats, min 12”, 25 crappie, min 10”, check your fishing regulations for other limits.
The plan is for us to camp at Jackson Hill Park, which is off FM 2851, just south of Broaddus, TX. Phone 936-872-9266, or on the web www.jacksonhill.us . There are numerous accommodation options. Make your reservations for campsites, cabins, rv sites, or boat slip rental. Sites will fill up so don’t delay.

Fishing Options: |
|
This time of year, best times will be early and late, with night fishing a viable option. For bass, hit hydrilla, lilly pads, willows, points, ditches, stumps, creeks, and visible structure. Throw topwaters, frogs, spinner and buzz baits early. Plastic worms, either Carolina or Texas rigged, crank baits, and jigs in deeper water, along the edges of the grass beds, and brush piles for crappie. Live minnows, or small black/chartreuse roadrunners are effective on the panfish. Jackson Hill also allows fishing from their dock.
- Jackson Hill Area - As you paddle out from the park, follow the shoreline to the left to reach the “Jackson Hill” N31 15.711, W94 19.919 area. There are a number of coves, islands, grass beds, and creek channels. This area should be protected from prevailing winds, if any, and offers a lot of options. Good Bass and Crappie fishing in this area.
- The Deer Stand – about 1.5 miles from the marina across the lake is an area known as the Deer Stand. There are a number of islands, rocky outcrops, and other structure in this area. N31 16.047, W94 21.871 The Angelina River channel is in this area as is Main Lake Point no.2. These islands are all part of the national forest and could be used for primitive camp sites. Think “ Panther Point” in fresh water. Typical bass patterns work in this area and it is well known for catfish.
- Other Rayburn areas- there are other parks and boat ramps within short driving distance of Jackson Park. Too many to list here, a Google search of Lake Sam Rayburn produces a good list of options for launching and guide services.
- There are numerous guides for bass, crappie, and other species. Two services that I have personal experience with are Larry and Gary King, and Will Kirkpatrick. Gary and Larry father and son, have been guides on Rayburn for years and are well know crappie guides. Will Kirkpatrick conducts bass fishing schools on Rayburn and has also guided for years. There are plenty of other excellent guides if that suits your plan.
