| Trip Description: |
| |
Week end camp out. Depending on the weather/wind we have the options to fish Cedar Bayou, Mesquite Bay or the Matagorda Island surf.
This trip allows a wide variety of fishing opportunities for anglers. Cedar Bayou is often targeted successfully by PACK members. Fishing in the bayou has been spotty to excellent depending on the clarity of the water and if the bayou is open to the Gulf of Mexico.
The surf is fished by all members especially in the dawn and dusk hours by anglers looking for trout. Some members bring surf gear and target shark, bull reds, etc. In the past, pink and red plastics, rattletraps and topwaters have produced trout.
The bayou was closed to the Gulf last year but depending on storms it could be open. This past year PACK members saw large water snakes and numerous stingrays in the bayou. In past trips, the group has seen alligators both on the land and in the bayou, as well as coyotes, deer and small herds of cattle on the beach and along the bayou.
We will be tent camping on the beach in the highest sand we can find. The area allows you to leave your kayak pulled up at night on the beach. Depending on where your tent is located, you may have to walk several hundred feet to your tent. There are no shelters, water or restrooms. All food, water, provisions and camping gear must be brought to Cedar Bayou via the Skimmer mother boat. The Skimmer will deliver us as close as possible to the camping location. It may be necessary to offload the mother boat as far away as 4 miles from our ultimate camping destination depending on tide. However, for the past several trips the Skimmer has been able to deliver us within 1-2 miles from the end of Cedar Bayou. Remember, your personal camping gear will need to be transported via your kayak up to 4 miles, so pack accordingly.
Fall (September to November) When the water and day time temperatures begin to cool down, the fish start moving towards the back lakes and feed throughout the day. The average air temperature is 70-80 during the day and can drop to 40-50 degrees at night.
However the month of September can easily be in the mid to upper 90s depending on weather patterns.
