Description:

Trip Initiator: Blake Colburn

Trip Description: This area has some big redfish and due to its unique position at the mouth of the Neches River, the marsh is mostly fresh water. In fact, you can even catch a bass from time to time at this location. We initially launch at the Port Neches Park and I normally just make a big circle around the island to the north. The scenery here is gorgeous and it isnt a terribly hard paddle, unless the wind is in the wrong direction. The plan is to launch by 6:30 which is about 20 minutes before first light (6:50).

How to Sign Up: Click on the enroll tab at the top.

How to Get There: Click Here for a pin to the Port Neches Park. Additionally, there is a restauraunt there called the Neches Wheelhouse that is adjacent to the launch. It is a very nice boat launch situated at the Neches river about 1.5 miles from the mouth of the marsh.

About the Location: To get to this spot, you need to cross the Neches Ship Chanel, which can get very busy at times, so make sure to exercise caution while traveling to and from the fishing grounds. There are also some deep channels in the marsh that are 8+ feet deep, so just keep that in mind. If the tide is moving this day (which will most likely be the case) there might be some areas that could have strong currents, especially at the entrance to the back lake. If the weather is calm, the water can also get fairly clear, so sightcasting could be a real possibility. The popping cork is deadly here, as is topwater. I dont have much luck on soft plastics, but the general pattern is that noisy lures catch the most here.

Things to Bring:

  • Life Jackets are necessary and must be worn at all times!  .
  • Noise making device (horn, whistle, etc)
  • Radio - I will be tuned into chanel 69
  • Water and Snacks
  • Bug Spray/Sunscreen

Other info:

Use stringers with caution, because their is a chance of seeing a gator, however this is very rare. There is also a power plant there, so make sure to check this area for any alerts or water quality concerns if you plan on keeping fish.
