Oyster Lake Day Trip
August 8, 2009
|

Trip Description:

Oyster Lake is a shallow estuary with lots of shell and mud along with some sandier stretch that allow wading. The Lake is about 3 miles long by 1 ½ miles wide with water depths up to approximately 2 feet. Drift fish the lake or working the shorelines and shell, particularly those reefs at the western inlet and those on the eastern end at the Intracoastal Waterway. From the launch point at western inlet to the Lake, there is also access to the east shoreline of Matagorda Bay: the north shore of Palacios Bayou is within 2 miles to the north and Palacios Point is about 3 miles south. Soft plastics, top waters, or spoons can be effective at all these spots.

Note: launch area offers and excellent primitive camping spot for anyone interested in fishing an extra day.
Watch the tides, the wind, weather and temperature and dress appropriately, always wear your PFD.
Be prepared to renew your membership if it is due and to resign your insurance waiver. Adrian will have forms available.
Skill Level: Intermediate Note: Paddling distance is approximately 3 mile across the lake and strong south winds can make for long paddle back.

How to Get There:

Oyster Lake is south of Collegeport. From Highway 35 west of Bay City, take Highway 1095 going south (at Tidehaven High School). (Either come thru Bay City or take H 71 from US59 at El Campo, then head east on H 35 to Tidehaven). FR 1095 crosses FR521 (at Tin Top Store) and continues south before turning west toward Collegeport, the end of the road. Before you get to ‘downtown’ Collegeport, turn south (left) on CR 365/Oyster Lake Road (note: River Rd goes north). Pavement quickly ends; it is about 9 miles until your arrive at the bridge across the Lake inlet. Meet at the shell reef after crossing the bridge and looping back to the Bay shore. Total distance from US59/I610 in Houston is about 110 miles. Allow at least 2 ½ hrs to drive.
Note there are no facilities at Tidehaven, Tin Top, Collegeport, or Oyster Lake
