Trip Description:

Bessie Heights is a place on the north side of sabine lake near the mouth of the Neches River. Historically, Ive done well here and there is a wide expanse of marshland to fish around, mainly targetting redfish, and occasionally trout and black drum. 

We will be launching at the Port Neches Park, and depending on wind, either heading north, or preferably south where we can enter into the back lake through one of the cuts. From here, anywhere in the area is fishable and there are dramatic depth changes in several areas where redfish like to hang out with extensive shallow marshland nearby (Popping Cork is King here). During this time, birds work in the big back lake and often have reds and trout underneath them. I personally will be making a loop around around the island directly northeast of the park which covers a good range of areas and is about 6 miles minimim of paddling (picture below). The moon is full so there should be good tidal flow. This area normally has fresh to brackish water but is normally not an issue unless the river is in flood stage. Sunrise is at 7:23am and its a 1.5 miles paddle to get there. This being said, Im going to aim to leave the boat ramp and be on the water by 6:30. Bring a 360 light since it will still be dark and there will likely be boat traffic. I will also be on channel 69 on the VHF radio to those who wish to bring one

 **In the event that the winds are from the north, the launch will either be changed to the Lower Neches WMA launch around Bridge City/Vidor or the trip will be changed to Texas Bayou or Little Texas Bayou. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at 832-760-7732.
