How would everyone feel about requiring that everyone going on the remote primitive trips have a vhf radio? I find that the reception on the line of sight walkie talkies can be spotty at best. If we are going to be serious about safety, especially now with the large numbers of people and the greater degree of seperation among the participants we should require some way to reach everyone...
I started looking at the VHF radios on Monday but found way to many choices. I was at Academy and the sales person working the counter handed me a radio with the manual and told me he didn't know anything about VHF and I would have to read the book and figure it out. I would like to hear from anyone that have VHF, what brand/model and what they like or do not like about it. There are radios from $40 to $500 with all sorts of bells and whistles. I am stuck with the walkie talkies at this time.
Donald,
Go to Breakwater marine between NASA1 and 518 on the east side of 45. They're next to Valentino's restaurant. They did a seminar a couple years back for 2coolers on GPS units but deal in all marine electronics. Great people and maybe PACK should try to get them to come out and give a talk on VHF marine radios.
I'm not affiliated or associated with http://www.breakwatermarine.com/ . Hope this isn't considered SPAM. Just trying to pass on what might be valuable info to PACK members.
good suggestions.. I bought a unit for around 100.00 from academy.. has ability to run on batteries, or charge...has basic features and weather bands... Has worked great... If you are in MISP this weekend, look me up...
VHF radio lesson learned from MISP trip. I boughy Academy's $50 VHF with weather band by Cobra about 9 months ago that is advertises as waterproof....it's not....I could not trasmit but could hear others....it's going back to Academy....spend the xtra $ on these type items and avoid thhe hassle of these things not working.
