Regretably, the trip is cancelled as a result of damage delivered by Hurricane Ike. According to a couple of posts I found on the internet, Spoonbill RV Park was "washed away". I spoke to a ranger at the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge(ANWR)who reported the area was devastated. ANWR is closed indefinitely at this time and might reopen in some limited way in a couple of months. The conditions for kayak fishing are not favorable in the area as there is lots of oil in the water along with the carcasses of cattle, horses, alligators, and birds.

I emailed Spoonbill to officially cancel our trip and received a response from the manager, Pete.  It's official, Spoonbill was destroyed.  Please see email below:

Thanks Barry:
Spoonbill was destroyed.  The owners are having to rebuild their oyster business, so spoonbill will have to wait
from 1 to 2 years before they try to do anything there.  I will miss everyone.
Pete

Subject: PACK reservations Sept.26-28

Based on reports of extensive damage to the Smith Point area, PACK has cancelled our outing for this forthcoming weekend.  On the internet I found unconfirmed reports that the lodge was severely damaged. We were really looking forward to staying at your facility again.  Our hearts and best wishes go out to you.  Hope you are all well and that the park can reopen in the future.
