Craig invited Bob and Me to join him in New Braunfels to scope out fishing opportunities around his new house in Gruene. We arrived on Saturday afternoon with enough time to travel down river road to scope out a place to fish on Sunday. We decided on forth crossing, there is a camp that offers wade fishing for 5 dollars. We arrived Sunday around 9 AM, Craig and Bob had fly rods, I only had my saltwater rod, I didn’t even have freshwater baits, luckily Craig had a few baits for me to try. I started out with power baits called trout nuggets with out any success. I switched to a roster tail, my kind of fishing cast and retrieve. I called a friend for some pointers, and was told to start walking until you see them. The hunt was on. I continued up stream were Bob had found a trout laying in about 2 feet of water, we were only 4 feet away, it was like it was dead I kept throwing my lure at it, finally it striked, but no hookup. I was pumped now and was ready to catch a rainbow trout. The scenery was gorgeous, turkeys on the cliff, deer on the hill, they even came down the cliffs and crossed the river less than 100 yards from were we were fishing. Around 11 AM I hooked up with my first rainbow trout, this fish was huge; I landed it guessing it to be around 22 inches. I unhooked it and released it only for it to float belly up 50 yards downstream. I retrieved it and tried to revive it without success so I put in on a makeshift stringer made out of fishing line. At the end of the day bob had one hookup that took a little drag and Craig had a bump. I caught 2 and had two other strikes. We measured the fish back at the truck, it was 19 inches long.

Once again you have proven to be a fishing machine. Salt water, fresh water, rivers, bays, marshes, whatever...if fish swim in it, they fear Bruce. Now that you've got rainbows down, come to Fayette County and show us how to catch big bass...

I think Bruce could catch fish in a corn field.

Thanks for the interesting report, Bruce.  Beautiful fish!

I have had it on my mind lately to head to the Guadalupe since I recently finished the Texas Fly Fishers course.  I know the Trout Unlimited association also has a "lease" on the Guadalupe you can take part if for $95/year (catch and release only).

I need to get off my butt and cut my teeth out on the Guadalupe soon before it warms up too much.  You have helped to inspire me!  These little guys (rainbows) TPWD stocks in the park ponds around here in the wintertime are kinda small.

Those Rooster Tails are great.  That (and flies) are what I've used the past two P.A.C.K. trips to the Llano River.

Glad you did well!
