Decided to return to the scene of the crime on June 5 and see if I would have any better luck. Bastrop Marina was out of live shrimp, so it was dead frozen for this excursion... Unloaded and gumbooted 'er straight across the lake to Nick's Lake Cut. Litle bit of a breeze, but I knew I didn't want to dead head into the wind at the end of the day (learned that lesson earlier), so chose not to go to the weir this time. I made a decent clip (although 2 butterflies passed me and I was doing 4mph!)
Fished the mid-section of the cut most of the day until I got tired of boats burning the water - no bites, but I could sure see there were fish in the water. Decided to follow the south shoreline on the way back to the parking lot and came across an area where fish were leaving visible wake on the surface. That south shoreline is a mud embankment, so I suppose these were drums stirring up crabs and such. Had my last piece of dead shrimp on a bobber, glanced over and my bobber was under water. As soon as I put down rod 1 and picked up rod 2, the hook set and the reel was singing! As I was working it back to the kayak, it swam under me so I had to do a backward overhand swing to get my line on the same side of the boat as the fish. A minute of so later I had the bobber in view so I knew I was only 18 inches away from a darn big fish. Next was a huge pull from the fish and there went my 12 pound test - slack. I said a bad word. Then I said sorry and thanked God for a good day's fishing. Then I went to Academy and bought some of that braided line on my way home.
Perhaps this riday I will go back and try again - 3rd times usually charmed, right?
I did go out the next Friday - got a small (15") red on a dead finger mullet - kind of bummed because I haven't figured out a bulletproof way how to keep bait alive onboard. So I bought a 4 foot bait casting net and am going to try to use the Holistic approach! And of course, only upgraded the line on one rod, not the other - wouldn't you know it, I lost ANOTHER big fish that snapped my line...
Here's the big question - has anyone explored / fished the channel on the south end of the lake that outflows from the parking lot - ? That looks and feels very inviting............ I went down it a ways and definitely saw some surface wake of fish swiming below.....
I'll try to figure out how to attach a pic of the red....
