CANCELLED DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER

Keller Bay
Saturday – July 28, 2007

Trip Description:

Keller Bay is an inlet on the east side of Lavaca Bay 1½ miles south of the Jackson-Calhoun county line in eastern Calhoun County (at 28°36' N, 96°27' W). Driving time is approximately 2.5 hours from Houston.

The bay is fairly shallow (4-5’ in its center) and is highlighted by tidal grass flats along its Southern/Southeastern corners. The area is mostly undeveloped with shorelines of grass and shell. The bay has submerged grasses and offers exceptional wadefishing for trout, redfish, and flounder.

Keller Bay is probably named for Francis Keller, an early Calhoun County settler and is fed by Keller Creek from the North. The Olivia community overlooks the bay from its eastern shore and was settled in 1892 by Swedish Lutherans. The town was named by Reverend C.J.E. Haterious who brought the settlers to the area and then named the town after his wife, Olivia Olson Haterious.

Fishing Options:

You will have a variety of options to consider:

To see an aerial view and topographic map of Keller Bay click here.

From the launch area you must first choose between paddling North to fish up into Keller Creek (often good for redfish) or to head South along the East or West shorelines. The northern part of the East shoreline often offers good fishing, especially early in the morning near the end of the private fishing pier which keeps a light on all night to attract baitfish. The rest of that shoreline generally is not productive however.

You will also find several excellent fishing areas along the west shoreline of the bay as you head down from the launch area toward Mud Point. Fish around the patches of grass and watch for tailing reds. And the South shoreline (from Rupert Point back to the Southeast corner) offers mixed shell and grass which usually keeps the water very clear and frequently holds trout. The total distance from the launch site to Mud Point or Rupert Point is about 2.5 - 3 miles.

Just outside the mouth of Keller Bay the shoreline from Mud Point heading west to Rhodes Point offers excellent wade fishing over firm bottoms and submerged grass beds. However, this stretch of shore is primarily a fall and winter fishery. It is ideal on a north or northeast wind.
