Interesting trip to GISP (and Aransas Pass) this weekend. I managed to get away early thursday and launched at the San Patricio County public ramp at Hampton's landing about 8:30 am. Paddled just a short way into the small lagoon along the ICW and went hunting for reds. Only managed to land one undersized rat on topwater and started catching trout in the channel and drifting across the lagoon. All small fish all morning. A sampler of what was to follow the rest of the trip for me. Went in for lunch and met Gus and Bob S for a repeat that afternoon. Gus managed a few good trout on the outside of Ransom Is, and Bob and I returned to the lagoon. I continued to catch small trout and rat reds until the sprinkling rain turned into a torrent and we called it a day. Met up with Joel for a morning with Slowride. We hit the launch about 6:30 and paddled into Terminal Flats under gorgeous conditions. Maybe too gorgeous. With the big moon, slick water, and time of year.. the reds were just not eating. We had a few half hearted blow ups.. more like pop ups...that resulted in only one keeper red on topwaters. We managed a couple other fish following up the pop ups with a jig, but no more keepers. Headed for Slowrides honey holes in the channels in South bay and continued to hit assorted small trout and of all things Lizardfish (ugly bastages). At a couple of his spots, we were catching trout on every cast on doa's, small plastics of various types and colors, and in fact were catching so many, we were experimenting with an lure in our bag. Had a lot of fun, but the keepers were few and far between. Couldn't say how many small trout we educated, but there are bunch of small trout that have felt the hook in those holes. Joel and I returned to the same area that afternoon and continue to catch trout after trout, but alas no keepers for me. Kind of frustrating, especially after hearing that Brad and Bob R both limited on keeper trout less than a mile from us over in Estes Flats. The guys that fished around GISP had mixed results. However, the chili dinner put on by Hook and Cook was excellent and enjoyed the campfire chat with the campers. Alas the weatherman woke up and realized that PACK was in the area and sent his usual gale force winds our way on Sat morning. Along with the cold and gusts were blue skies. Joel and I decided to head back to Houston. Gus, Bob, Doby, and Greg were hanging around hoping for a break in the weather sat pm or sat morning. Hope you all found the fish.
