For those of you joining Ken on the San Bernard River trip wanted to offer a few lure suggestions as I fished there this past weekend for the XRT redfish series. Both the 1st place and 4th place (my team) stringers came from the area. Most of my fish were caught on chartreuse/redhead top dog jr, but my tournament fish was caught on baby minus 1. Secret to fishing over oysters is that I remove the front hook and replace the back hook with a 3X or 4X strong treble. Talking to others who fished in the area during the XRT, the productive baits were Wakers, Baby minus 1 and of course Gulp. Because of the heavy oysters, most rigged gulp weightless or as light a jig head as possible. There were plenty of redfish caught with many oversize.
Also, the fish found varied, the team that took first caught their fish in one of the lakes drifting across the lake and casting to the reds. While in the lake my partner and I were in, the fish were against the shore. I would cast almost up on bank and work topwater back to me or make a long cast and work the topwater along the shore 10' or so from bank.
One thing common between all the lakes, was that around 11:00am when the water quit moving and the temps were elevated, the bite shut off.
Also, I caught my tournament redfish by noticing some small shrimp popping on surface and thats why I threw the baby minus 1 to downsize, turned out to be a 26", 6+ lb redfish.
Hope this is useful information.
