This course will be taught be Steve Walls from Dallas. Steve is an American Canoe Association certified Level lII Coastal Kayak instructor. Coastal Kayak Strokes & Maneuvers Refinement

Do you want to take your skills to a level most kayakers dream of? Learn the boat handling concepts of Body Boat Blade. This is a complete system that integrates your strokes with boat edging, maximizing your efficiency in boat handling. These skills bring it all together making your boat perform in ways you wouldn't imagine. The strokes and skills we will be covering will be: A more efficient Stern Rudder, Hanging Draw, Draw on the Move, Bow Rudder, Sculling Draw, Low Brace and Sculling for Support. To make these more effective we will be adding a variety of edging techniques. Last we address what happens inside your cockpit. This will be a full 8 hour day. Please bring a lunch , plenty of water and the gear you usually take on a day trip. We want your boats to be a realistic, normal load.

Cost for the class is $80. There is a separate $10 per person entrance fee at 288 Lake.

Minimum Gear to Bring
  • Kayak with floatation

  • Paddle

  • Sprayskirt (not needed of course with sit-on-tops)

  • PFD

The class will be held at 288 Lake

  • Facility: This is a 16-acre, spring fed lake surrounded by trees and nicely kept grounds with picnic tables. They have well maintained port-a-potties. It is mainly used for scuba instruction, but will admit kayakers and swimmers.
  • Directions: Lake 288 is north on Cullen from the Beltway; right onto Schurmier and travel .9 miles, right onto the property at the olive colored building/gate. We will be using the small beach on the left at the entrance. See map link.
  • Paddling Area - The area in front of the beach out 100 yards or so and the east half the lake should be used for paddling. East side of lake is on your left as you look at the lake from the beach. See map below. The lake primarily serves divers and you must stay well clear of the area with large floats, as these are underwater platforms.
  • Wavier - You will need to sign a 288 Lake waiver. It would be helpful if you download and complete the waiver in advance. Write "HASK" in the upper right hand corner of the wavier along with the date. 288 Waiver 2010

This is an ACA sanctioned event. Every participant must wear a PFD and sign a HASK/ACA Waiver. Click on link below to print out the waiver. Please complete prior to the trip so we can all get on the water a little quicker. HASK members who have provided a waiver to the HASK Membership Director within the last year do not need to complete a waiver.
