Fished IFA Corpus this past Sun and even though it was HOT and windy, the fishing on Tournament Day was excellent. On Saturday, I prefished Copano Bay on the Goose Island Side. Early there was lots of bait activity, but only small trout fell to topwater (SS jr) and Soft Plastics (Chicken on Chain Bass Assasin Shad tail on 1/8oz Rockport Rattler). Moved to shore to look for redfish, ended up with couple of nice flounder and saw one huge shark that chased bait all the way to bank. From jaws, I was looking for a bigger boat.
On Sunday, fished pass Port Aransas at one of my favorite spots (showed it at PACK meeting). Bait activity was off charts, but early on caught lots of dink trout, not what I was hoping for. Remembered that temperature showed 104 on Sat, so I moved over to grass flat next to deep channel. This move was ticket. I would work gulp on 1/4oz rattling jig along the edge where the flat dropped off to deeper water. While the winds were lighter I caught redfish after redfish with largest being 25". When wind picked up the redfish turned off and the trout turn on. Caught trout after trout with largest being 20-1/2". Those 2 fish good enough for me to finish 7th in IFA and I believe I was able to crack Top 10 for Angler of Year. Even as the wind got stronger, the trout bite just seemed to get better. Plenty of 16-18" trout. If I cast on grass flat wouldn't get bite and only small fish and piggies seemed to be in the deep channel. The keeper fish were all working along where the flat transitioned to the channel.
This pattern should be working down there and as things cool, the flats will only get better.
