Had the unfortunate experience to participate first hand in "fishhook removal exercises" this past weekend. Managed to firmly attach a #2 salt water treble hook into my right thumb... My inability to extract the hook by the customary hook removal techniques resulted in a trip to the local minor emergency clinic for extraction. When the doctor asked me what the end of the hook looked like (I had cut off the unembedded hook points) I realized this guy was no fisherman, probably had not done a hook extraction before, and made me wish I had a copy of the fishhook removal article from our library. So, for those of you who do not have the article, here's the link to the article. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010601/2231.html.
The article provides a doctor with a "how to", the patient a "how to" and various alternative methods of removing hooks. I can only say that the removal was successful, the pain of the removal was far greater than the hook going in or continuing to fish with a hook sticking out of your right thumb. The trout were really biting and we were a couple fish shy of our limits. Though I was too much of a baby to manage the push the hook on through method of removal... I was able to cast, hook, and land two more trout before my partner consented to head in....
Full report with evidence to be shared at tomorrow's meeting
I have added this as link under the Helpful stuff section on the website.
It would be a good idea to go to the Hospital on Galveston Island if it makes sense. They have plenty of experience on removing hooks. Unfortunately I had to do that once. It was not a bad experience, most of my worry was having to park my truck with all my fishing stuff in the bed to go into the Emergency Room.
I agree Eli.. unfortunately, we had launched from Smith Point... so by the time we got to the boat ramp etc.. it was really more practical to go toward home.... next time I'll take my how to remove a hook instructions to the emergency room with me...I may even charge the doctor for the class
A few years back my brother-in-law and I were catching some nice trout. He would land the fish then mess with net instead of fish I thought well he is a big boy he knows what he is doing.Sure nuff the fish fliped buring one barb of a top dog treble in his thumb.Ok picture this he is holding a three pound trout net and all and I'm trying to get the hook off lure with split ring pliers. This is not not the easyest thing to do with him asking you to hurry.Finely got the hook off lure and took the 20# leader line that I had doubled it and here we go. He is holding down the eye of hook tight to his thumb I have the leader string thew the loop of hook. Now he turns his head and soon as I get nerve I jeck hard and the hook came out and shot across boat.Ok good thing now he sqeezes and makes it bleed to flush out and we put Seagram's 7 on it
to clean it.Fished the rest of day and never got sore.I very glad that it worked out I don't want to do that agian.
