I launched from GISP into Lake Como and took a left around into Dana’s Cove. I tried to follow the shore and keep some land in sight – but really couldn’t – the water was too shallow to fish (6” to 18”) so i kept going. As I rounded the corner all land was lost and then my whole universe got very small. All my senses were tuned in - the sights, smells, sounds and even taste and feel.
It was reduced to a my own breathing and the sound of my paddle pushing me through the water, a fish popping in the distance, birds to left or right , my kayak slicing through the water. You could hear your heartbeat and you could hear water dripping from your paddle and you could hear your rudder move the water. It was the most peaceful thing I’ve experienced in years. That lasted for about 15 minutes – I could have gone back to sleep right then and there.
Dana's Fog also found Tim and I in West Bay.
We also launched from Lake Como and had made it to the geo tubes that protect the Dana's cove from the major waves of west bay. We got about a hour head start on ramosad. I had experienced the same small feeling being in the fog without site of land a couple weeks earlier and was put into the same position as Adrian. But I did not hear all the birds, fish and voices. I was alone and LOST in the fog..... I was in West Bay past confederate reef and somewhere south of Deer Island. This was my first true lesson on finding a way point on my gps. I am also fortunate to have the Garmin mapsource maps on my unit.
My goal was to find a waypoint. I had a point for South Deer Island on the GPS and decided that if I could find this way point, I could find my way back to the boat ramp on Sportsman Rd. (I created a waypoint for my kayak launch because it is a small boat ramp between all the houses along Sportsman’s Road). I made it to Deer island after paddling enough to find the direction I was going. When the pointer and breadcrumbs showed me going in the right direction, I was good. The fear of being LOST and ALONE was gone. I found the Island and was happy. I could fish now and know that I could get back to the boat ramp even if the fog did not lift. It did not lift and I did make it back.
On this day outside of Danas cove near the Geotubes we found the Trout in the Fog. Between Tim and I we had 8 keepers in about an hour. But when the wind picked up, the fog and the trout were gone.
From our experiences posted here, it is better to know how to use your equipment before you have the feeling of being LOST in the FOG. Practice your escape by finding your way around your neighborhood in the dark with your GPS before finding yourself in the fog on the water.
Brad, it was great getting to fish with you at GISP. By the way, I think I goofed a minute ago and clicked "report post" on your thread. I thought it was for posting another report...I'm thinking it may mean something else. I'm learning this system.
Anyway, it was fun meeting the PACK folks and camping together and fishing.
Let me tell you guys...Brad tore 'em up. He had 3 times the number of fish I had. He has a secret weapon...well not really secret. He gave me some tackle to rig up like him and on the 2nd or 3rd cast...wham...nice speck.
