October 2008 PACK Meeting Minutes
By ramosad @ 6:21 PM :: 2205 Views

The Oct 21, 2008 regular meeting opened with 29 members and one guest. The scheduled September meeting was cancelled after Ike's destruction in the area. It appears our members came through it with only minor scrapes and none having to stand in line for a FEMA trailer.

1. Fishing reports

As a result  Cedar Bayou trip and Smith Point trips having to be cancelled and all of the Galveston bay system not looking fishable for awhile, Adrian called an officers meeting on Oct 1 to replan the trips for the rest of this season.

Dick McGongile volunteered to lead our next day trip to Salt Lake Oct 11. It was as an ice cream day with everybody catching at least something but you have to really read the trip report perfected by Brad Valtierra. Awesome work Brad! He can make a no fish day look great. Two slams but look at the red of oleyaker's and he's not a little guy.

Buzz reported on his recent Yucatan trip chasing tarpon, snook and bone fish. We are green with envy and hope we can do the same when we reach his age.

Our flounder king, Dick McGonigle,  ventured out to Pelican Island to see if his favorite flounder holes survived the wrath Of Ike and found piles of debris and dead animals. He decided that the place will need some time to heal. But he had to catch the start of the flounder run so to the South jetty he goes and calls up two of his fishing pals. The word was already out. By the time they arrived their were numerous flounder fisherman with several catches but  he and his pals did manage to catch a few.

Gary Z reported on his excursion to SLP. You can only get there from Galveston side. Presently there is no fee to cross the bridge The boat ramp is in operation but the bridge to the RV Park camp grounds is out. About as far south as you can drive on the bluewater highway is to the yellow cabins. Cannot get to Earnie's or Christmas Bay without a 4x4.

2. Upcoming Events

Adrian and Ken will be at the Expo this weekend Oct 25 giving Kayaking instructions while most of us will be at Panther Point soaking suds and plastics.

The Panther Point trip is this weekend Oct 24-26 with 25 signed up. Is this our biggest camp out? There will be 18 on the skimmer from Rockport and the others coming by individual boats. Dennis will be providing the Sat evening meal of gumbo that will need lots of fish. Hope somebody does some catching. Dick McGonigle will be bringing the Friday fixin's of fajaita's. This is looking like it will be a great weekend.

3. Check the calendar for the rescheduled trips.
November weekend trip will be to Goose Island State Park
November Seawolf park is still questionable.
December daytrip to Fayette County Lake.

4. The 2009 outings are open for suggestions and discussion. Suggestions were made and will be decided upon in December. If you have a suggestion, please enter it before December.

5. Tonight's Guest speaker was Bill Bragman, owner of www.YAK-GEAR.com

Who ever would have thought, starting  a company with a paddle leash because he didn't find one retail that he liked. Bill now has leashes and hardware in FTU, Academy, Gander Mtn and others. He sources out American made products to use and gives a life time warranty on all of his items and he is still able to sell them for less. What-a-deal! If you need a yak rigged or some rigging, be sure to check out his site or give him a call at 713 826-2252. Good work Bill.
