Guys and gals, as some of you know PACK accepted the sponsorship role of checking on and looking out for the TX Parks and Wildlife Coastal Paddling Trail at Christmas Bay. Two years and one day ago, they were starting to show their age from sun, wind, and salt exposure. Then Ike struck and K/O'd most of what remained. I paddled the trail last July with some friends. Only a few weathered signs remained. I just recieved this note in from Paul Hammerschmidt, a Special Projects Director for the TPW Coastal Fisheries Division:
Chris: last week, Ron Smith and replaced all the trail marker signs in Christmas Bay. We also installed two information kiosks, one at the Brazoria County Park at SLP and the other where Earnies II once stood. The Christmas Bay Coastal Paddling Trail is now complete.
I would like to present an opportunity for PACK to help us maintain the paddling trail. Since your organization is the sponsor of this trail, I propose your group take over maintenance of the marker signs on a permanent basis.
We will provide the numbered signs, and you will provide the PVC pipe, nuts and bolts and labor to replace missing or damaged signs. Costs to your organization will be minimal. The new signs are definitely more substantial than the originals, so they should last quite some time.
Please present this proposal to PACK and let me know if your organization agrees to this arrangement. Thank you and PACK for your interest in and support of our Paddling Trail program. Regards and happy paddling.
Paul Hammerschmidt
** We can put it up for discussion at the next meeting. Chris
