Powderhorn Lake 2011 was a successful trip again for all. Limits of trout were caught by Brad V. and Bruce B. All the others picked up trouts, reds, black drums and flounders during the weekend.
On Friday, a few of us launched out by day break to a calm wind to head out to your spots. It was like glass on the water till about 8 am. The wind picked up as the day progressed. From what it looked like everyone spread out in different directions looking for the bite. Bob S. and I hit the shoreline on the opposite on the lake directly in front of the launch area. A few rat reds were caught on the flats over hard sand and shell. It also protected us from the wind that was increasing as the day went on. Bob S. was also trying out a Hobie Mirage on this trip. This weekend was a great way to test it with the element that Mother Nature offered us. As the day went on more PACK members joined us on the water. Around lunch time a few of us came back in the get something to eat and to clean some fish as well. Brad V. caught the first limit of trout that day out in lake in the deeper water. Great job Brad V.
On Friday when everyone settled in after a long paddle/peddle on the windy lake we all went and ate at the marina for our steak dinner. It was nice for all of us to get together and swap the days adventures with each other during dinner. That night I decided to fish from the bulk head at the marina under the lights. With my gold spoon I caught a few specks while the locals were fishing with shrimp on the bottom. As I was catching the specks, one of the locals could not resist asking me what I was using to catch these fish. A few minutes later he too was throwing a gold spoon as well. But the bite stopped. So I gave him the only keeper trout I had caught under the lights for going inside to buy one of those top dollar spoons. We still had Saturday to fish anyways.
Saturday morning was about the same conditions in the morning. Most of us launched about 6:30am. It was smooth paddle/peddle out to the lake with the water a little higher than Fridays conditions. Doby and I went the the same area in the morning from the previous day to look for some reds. We spaced ourselves about 100 yard. This is were I caught my only keeper of the day, a 24.5 red. As I was trying to call him over he got a hit on his Spook Jr about 5 feet from his kayak. When he went to set the hook the line snapped. He lost his lure and a nice red. Later that morning as I was drifting I found a Spook Jr floating near me. I picked it up and placed it on my boat. By this time the wind was starting to increase to about 10-15 mph and it was starting to white cap on the flats. A few of us came back in around 2pm to some serious wave movement in the channel. By this time the wind was a good 20-25 mph. Is this a pattern that PACK trips are always having? We seem to bring the wind with us. But that don't stop us from catching fish. Bruce B. came in with his limit of trout. Nice stringer for a brutal day on the water.
Saturday night the limit catchers fried their catch for us for dinner. Thanks guys for a wonderful dinner that night.
I would like to thank all that joined us on this trip to for making it fun and memorable. We had about 14 members on this trip. Once again thank you all for helping me make this trip a success. |
