Starvation Cove Trip Report, March 17, 2007

Eager kayakers met at 6:45am at Pirates Cove coming as far as Dallas with determined minds for a new adventure awaiting in the day ahead. A special welcome to our guests: Gus B (from Baytown), David G (from Pasadena) and Manny F and Mike H (from Dallas).  By 7:15 kayaks were undertow on their way to Starvation Cove/Melgar Cove area.   There were 10 PACK members and 4 guest in attendance.  Weather conditions were slightly windy (E, SSE), with high pressure due to the recent drop in air temperatures overnight…note some off color water mixed with clear green water near protected shorelines...Water temperature ranged from 65-70 throughout the day….and with that the adventure began.

Bob R and Jeff W landed 3 fish upon casting immediately post 1st drop off to the cove….Coinciding with the group in-tow from Pirates Cove was a 3 members (Jason T, Jim R, and Barry S) paddling from Sportsman Road...Arriving at 5:45am they proceeded their journey to meet the group at Starvation Cove.

Starvation Cove was fished from hugging the shorelines to drifting the center with little to no avail….Jason was fishing Melgar Cove and Bruce met up with him.  Jason was able to scratch out two nice fish, 1 21” trout and a 26” trout….Jason reported with 26” inch trout to have been caught with a chartreuse corkey with a orange throat. He also noted that it had a big mullet in it. Bruce also landed 1 small trout and several small flounder. All fish were caught on corkies…

The group headed back to Pirates Cove around 2-2:30pm and proceeded to share stories, food, drink and a good time at the marina restaurant…As this trip wasn't’t the most successful in terms of fish caught, many were glad to just get outdoors.
