Crawfish Boil details
By Oleyakker @ 7:11 AM :: 2151 Views

The SATURDAY JUNE 4, 2011 PACK CRAWFISH BOIL AND FAMILY SOCIAL subject to interest and prompt sign up will be comprised of a day of fishing, paddling, beachcombing, swinging in a hammock, bird watching and hopefully eating enjoyment with our members and families.  PLEASE RSVP QUICKLY DUE TO THE RAPIDLY APPROACHING EVENT, because we will be renting a large tent and food costs will be partially subsidized by PACK's treasury.

Though arrangements can be made to camp on the premises from Friday night thru Sunday evening for those interested, the Saturday event will start as early as you wish.   If the wind makes it choppy at Virginia Point, protected fishing is available within 1 mile at Fat Boy's Boat Ramp on Jones Lake, at Galveston Bait on the other side and base of the causeway 2 miles away, or protected in and around the railroad bridge and causeway one half a mile away, or the north side of Texas City Dike. Live bait is plentiful by castnet or Galveston Bait or Fat Boy's.

TWO CONSIDERATIONS!

1.  THE HEIGHT AVAILABLE UNDER THE FIRST ARCH OF THE RAILROAD BRIDGE TO REACH THE PREMISES IS 8 FOOT, 4 INCHES.  BE CAREFUL OF YOUR HEIGHT WITH YAK ON TOP OF YOUR VEHICLES.

2. VERY FEW RV MODELS WILL PASS UNDER THE RAILROAD BRIDGE.

THE MENU

BOILED CRAWFISH (ABSENT SOME EMERGENCY RE AVAILABILITY)

    SEAFOOD GUMBO

    BBQ CHICKEN

    CHIPS & DIP

WE'LL BE EATING MID AFTERNOON IN THE 2 PM TO 4 PM RANGE OF TIME.

THE COST IS $10 PER HEAD, AND PACK IS PICKING UP THE BALANCE - SO -    PROMPT HEAD COUNT PLEASE!

Guys, if anyone is wanting an audience for their killer recipe, , JUST BRING IT ON!  I hear one of our member is bringing a keg of his own St. Arnold's brew for us as well as his famous root beer!   PLEASE BRING  WATER, SOFT DRINKS OR OTHER BEVERAGES YOU MAY NEED - AND MORE ICE IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN LESS ICE AT A PICKNICK.

Bathroom facilities are a little limited, electricity would be by generator and water is hauled in, but sun ups and sundowns are extraordinary, AND FISHING HAS BEEN GOOD FROM THE RAILROD BRIDGE ALL THE WAY TO CAMPBELL BAYOU 2.2 MILES AWAY.  STEVE COFFEE, GUIDE, HAS BEEN IN CAMPBELL BAYOU FOR A MONTH NOW.

Remember it is a protected wildlife refuge of 3000 acres and all kinds of animals including rattle snakes and Black Widow Spiders inhabit the Virginia Point area. There may be some, lots or no mosquitos, depending on the day. Long pants and shirt sleeves, and no flip flops are probably good.  Wading features ankle braking oysters alternating with firm mud and sand.  Walmart, fine dining and pub crawling are right across the bridge in Galveston. Annual average temperatures are 76 degree low and 85 degree high, we'll be barely past the no moon and the long range forecasts are good so far.

Personally, I would vote that the big  trout caught by a member goes on the Don Smith Trophy, unless we're having a tournament this year.

DIRECTIONS TO VIRGINIA POINT:

FROM HOUSTON DRIVE TOWARD GALVESTON ON I-45 SOUTH TO THE TIKI ISLAND EXIT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE CAUSEWAY( EXIT NUMBER 4 ).

EXIT ON EXIT 4 AND TURN RIGHT ON THE FEEDER ROAD AT THE VALERO STATION.

FOLLOW THAT FEEDER ROAD AS IT TURNS TO THE RIGHT UNDER THE FREEWAY AT FAT BOY'S BOAT RAMP.

CONTINUE FOLLOWING THAT ROAD AS IT AGAIN CURVES RIGHT, SO NOW YOU ARE PARALLEL TO YOUR ORIGINAL PATH TO GALVESTON.

VEER TO THE LEFT INSTEAD OF GETTING ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP TO HOUSTON ON I-45.

DRIVING PARALLEL TO THE RAILROAD TRACKS YOU WILL APPROACH WITHIN 50 YARDS OF THE  OLD 1935 CAUSEWAY TO GALVESTON ISLAND WITH ITS BRICK ROAD AND TRAIN TRACKS.  IT IS NOW ONLY A RAILROAD BRIDGE.

TURN RIGHT ONTO THE GRAVEL PASSING THE LITTLE BLUE DUMPSTER ON YOUR LEFT, AND FOLLOW THE GRAVEL PATH COUNTERLOCKWISE DOWN AND TO THE LEFT UNDER THE FIRST ARCH OF THE RAILROAD BRIDGE.

VERY HIGH TIDES MAY HAVE A LITTLE WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE ONCE IN A WHILE - DON'T WORRY.

PROCEED THROUGH THE "GATE", WATCHING OUT FOR THE SMALL, NARROW BRIDGE WITH NO RAILINGS (YOU ARE PASSING THROUGH HISTORIC FORT HEBERT OF THE CIVIL WAR AND THE BRIDGE HAS CLAIMED A BRAND NEW CADILLAC IN THE DAYS OF LEGENDARY POKER GAMES ON VIRGINIA POINT)  AND CONTINUE TO THE END OF THE ROAD.

DESTINATION;    DICK AND LISA McGONIGLE'S PLACE AT 428 VIRGINIA POINT DRIVE WITH THE 14 FOOT RED AND WHITE UMBRELLA, WHITE TRAILER AND PALM TREES.  PARK NEAR THE END FENCE TO THE REFUGE AT THE END OF THE ROAD.

We could use a couple cooking volunteers mid, late morning to mid afternoon - call Dick.
