Ft. Anahuac PACK Trip Report
October 15, 2011
By Bill Berry
Seven Pack anglers joined together for a third annual PACK trip to Ft. Anahuac (gator capitol of Texas). We all arrived at first light with the tide having just reversed course to begin working toward low tide. With weather perfect, how could it get any better? Well it did as usual!
We all launched and headed into several directions to challenge the Ft. Anahuac Reds. The light easterly breeze of 5 mph gave way to zero mph for a few hours before turning southerly at 10-15 mph with low humidity. Some anglers went to fish the marshes about 1 to 1 - 1/2 miles away while a couple anglers went south into the bay and another few towards the islands. Many of us had a long distance sight of each other which makes Ft. Anahuac a good launch point and because the fishing starts at the launch site.
Rick Kinsey, Ron Romeis, and Barry Sandler., headed to areas deep inside the marshes. The rest of us (Michael Enshoff, Bob Skofca, John Nichols), and I fished the flats, islands, and North shore. Good success was found in all areas. Michael landed a personal best 26” flounder along with another flounder and nice red. Rick had the largest catch total of 10 keeper reds (he only kept 3). Ron limited on reds and I brought in 2 reds. Most everyone also caught varying sizes of reds and trout.
By 3 o’clock we were off the water and headed home after a wonderful PACK day trip. No reported gator sightings this year as the water salinity is up due to low fresh water run off and the gators have moved up river. |
