Boca Chica South Bay Chasing Snook
The PACK Aramada decended onto South Padre / Boca Chica Beach this past weekend with the intention of chasing snook in South Bay. The weather was great, but the fish had different ideas and did not want to cooperate. We had 5 different groups meet up from different locations (Beaumont/Dallas/Houston (2)/SPI). Incredibly, everyone made the designated rendezvous points at the designated times. As soon as we hit the Boca Chica Beach the problems started. Tim B started to move out to 4x4 onto the sand and his engine shut down. Apparently his engine electrical harness and diesel fuel line came loose and the front axle universal joint ripped out the harness when the 4x4 was engaged. Tow truck called to take Tim and Butch back to Brownsville for repairs. We disconnected Tim’s trailer and towed it down the beach with one of the other vehicles. Tim and Butch re-joined up with the group later that afternoon with a rental vehicle. Camp was set up and we all headed for South Bay, then disaster struck a second time. Traveled thru dunes and got one vehicle stuck in the mud. Hour and half later Jeep unstuck, we get to fish. Everyone saw fish (snook/reds/rays/drum/lots of drum) but nobody was able to connect. Saturday we all hit the water at first light. Only a few fish were caught, one rat red, croaker, and a who knows what it was. Eli was the only person who got onto the snook. At the end of the day we tried our hand on the South Jetty and all got to play with the ladyfish. Turtles and rays were seen along the jetty. Our plan was to fish a few hours Sunday but the wind was up, and the dicission was made to break camp and head for home. Our other partners in crime who stayed at the White Sands Motel and fly fished Friday/Saturday with local Guides strung a few fish Friday, but got skunked Saturday.
Despite the slim pickings, all had a good time. We will be back next year.
