This past weekend, July 12-14, 2013 PACK ventured down to Boca Chica / Port Isabel with the intention to fish specifically for Snook/Robalo in South Bay. That was the plan, but sometimes things just don’t work out as planned. Friday in the early am we all met up and traveled down via two groups; group one originated in Houston and caravanned (5 hour drive) Friday morning to Boca Chica. Group two traveled down a day earlier. Eli and Paula arrived at Boca Chica to discover that their trucks 4x4 wouldn’t engage. Mike E truck didn’t have the 4x4 option. The 4x4 option became a big issue we soon discovered. Upon arrival we set-up Camp on Boca Chica beach, up against the dunes near the South Jetty. We then head-out to reconnoiter launch locations on South Bay. What we discovered was the 4x4 trails/tracks thru the two dunes access locations; and also around the channel entrance to South Bay was not drivable because of the mud. We parked our vehicles and walked to the water’s edge only to sink up to our ankles in the mud. The closest we could get to the known past launch locations was about 30 yards. With soft sand getting thru the dunes, and then having to deal with the mud surrounding South Bay, nobody wanted to risk getting their vehicles stuck. End result, none of the kayaks were taken down and put into the water. Plan B was to fish, and kayak the surf. Plan C was to walk the rocks and fish South Jetty. All got skunked trying to fish the surf, and the wind had the waves up so launching the kayaks wasn’t an option. We then went for Plan C, and walked and fished the South Jetty. Lots of turtles were observed along the Jetty. Mike E got lucky and had three hookups on the Jetty. Fish one was a 14” Snook, which tossed the hook and flopped on the rocks, and back into the water. No pictures but I did see the fish bounce. Mike did land what I will call a rock fish. Mikes third fish took drag and cut his line. Mike E was the only angler who hooked fish. The rest of us got skunked. Saturday, we repeated the surf and jetty options and all got skunked. The Saturday morning surf was calm, Eli did take out his paddle board. The weekend weather was good, no rain while we were on the beach. The mosquitos were heavy at sun-down. The evening campfire talk with friends was a pleasure. All agreed to brake-camp earlier than planned on Saturday and we all headed home. The down side of the outing was it was a 5 hour drive home and get skunked again.
