Turtle Bay September 20 Trip Report

I met up with Bruce and Harry at the boat launch.  We all headed for the culvert.  Bruce got to the culvert first and reported that the high tide had the culvert almost submerged/not passable. Bruce reported that he caught a couple of trout and a skipjack at the mouth of the culvert.  Bruce then moved on south to the other marsh.  Harry and I arrive at the culvert.  Lots of bait fish being busted, I catch two dink trout and a skipjack.  Harry reports he can’t stand it and decides to try and get thru the culvert, he makes it so I follow.  I hung a rod on the culvert and in my attempt to save my rod I get dunked, end up hanging on the tail of my yak and the incoming tide current takes me thru the culvert.  Harry and I both saw lots of reds in the marsh but couldn't hook any.  We both did catch a croaker each.

Bruce caught three bull redfish and one 27 incher on the southwest shoreline on top waters.  He also located a school of 18 inch redfish in the marsh under birds, at one point he had fish in all three rods by netting the fish and using another rod to catch another.

When it was time to head back the incoming current was still flowing hard, and the culvert opening was very small.  Harry gave it a try and made it thru.  I stow my rods and gear in my hull and inadvertently loss my paddle which floats away with the current.  With some effort and using both of my hands as paddles I'm able to reach the paddle and retrieve it.  I get a running start and go into the culvert, using my hands on the top of the culvert to propel me thru.  I was going against a strong tide/current but finally made it.  Yes, we all got rained on.  This was my first fishing/paddle outing this year.  I had something of a Keystone Cops Adventure.
