PACK – Cedar Bayou – Tsunami

They should give survivor medals to those who endured this PACK Outing.
Over the years PACK has had to deal with Mother Nature. They say you can’t win when dealing with Mother Nature, this outing may have been over the top. The Cedar Bayou PACK Camp site was established on the beach. At 2:00 am Saturday morning our camp site got hit by a Tsunami/Bull Tide, we had two feet of water pouring over the camp site. We all scrambled to save our gear and get to higher ground. We lost one tent totally, and some of our gear. The Bull Tide/flood continued until about 9:00 am Saturday. Sunday morning about 2:00 am the rain started with strong winds. The remaining tents all got knocked down from the wind damaging many of the tents. During the whole of the weekend the wind was blowing a continua’s 15-25 SE mph. Surf was tore up which prevented any fishing in the surf. Rain was threating the whole of the weekend.

Trip Report
Thursday afternoon PACK was notified that the Skimmer required a Coast Guard Inspection prior to our departure 10:00 am Friday. Ultimately the Skimmer departed 3:00 PM Friday. While we waited out the delay we went over to Aransas Pass and fished the Sailboat Channel. A few nice trout were strung. We finally got our gear loaded on to the Skinner and set sail at 3:00 PM. The Skimmer unloaded at the no boat/no prop sign on Cedar Bayou about a quarter mile from the beach. We loaded up our kayaks and made the paddle to our selected camp location on the beach. We had camp set up by about 7:30 PM. We all fished the mouth of Cedar Bayou until sunset, no fish were strung. We could see a lot of bait and something busting bait, but we had no luck. Birds everywhere working the bait. At about 2:00 am Saturday morning the Tsunami/Bull Tide hit. Saturday morning all spent time talking about the Tsunami and reestablishing our camp site. Saturday’s fishing location was Vincent Slough, it was a difficult paddle to get across Cedar Bayous strong incoming tide. Once inside Vincent Slough the paddling was much easier from the wind that was to our back and from the protected high sand dunes. It was a difficult day of fishing. Yes, a few trout were strung but mostly undersized. Sunday morning we got hit again by strong winds and rain. We broke camp at 10:00 am and paddled back to the pickup point. While waiting for the Skimmer we passed the time fishing Cedar Bayou and a back marsh lake. In short order we had a flounder and trout.

We were surprised at seeing the number of people who walk to the surf, mouth of Cedar Bayou, and over to Vincent Slough from the no prop sign.

On the way down to Fulton Friday morning, Jim and Berry stopped at Bucee’s, while walking back to the car Jim got hit by a lady while backing up. Jim reported he knew a good Lawyer.

All of the outing participants had been to Cedar Bayou previously with PACK 10 plus years ago, and commented that today it doesn’t have the same personality as in the years past. Enjoyed the outing but don’t think we will be going back again anytime soon.
