Bolivar Hilton Trip Report

As I recall, during the ten years that I've led this trip, lousy weather was a factor just one other time, so I really can't complain. For the 2nd time, I rented the beach house on Thursday night to make it easy to get an early start on Friday.Thursday night , about seven of us dined at the Stingeree Marina Resturant. Chris Busch and Frank Stanley both fished the marsh on Thursday, where Chris made the big catch of the entire weekend- he snagged a perfectly good Curado reel and nice rod right out of the water! Chris also managed a few keeper trout, but everything else was undersized. Fortunately, Frank did NOT get stuck in the marsh mud this year!
Friday was an absolutely beautiful day, but slot-size fish were a little hard to come by.I don't know if it made any difference, but the water was definitely higher than usual in the marsh. Several of us used live shrimp so just about every species of fish was caught, many of which were 16" reds. Russell Moses had good luck when he crossed the ICW and turned right, behind the island. He had a few nice reds and trout. Blake and his friend Ken also found some nice reds and flounder, but they traveled over 11 miles to do so! Good thing thing they were in peddle propelled Hobies. Later in the day, Bill Leary found some slot reds way back in the marsh near the golf cart, along with clouds of hungry mosquitos. Numerous small flounder were caught back there too. I found it odd that there were so few slot reds caught in the marsh, and not one Big Ugly.
Fortunately, enough fish were caught for Saturday nights dinner, because the weather was terrible all day Saturday. Instead,, we spent the day playing dominos, watching college football,, eating and napping. Being stuck in a nice beach house STILL beats the hell out of being stuck in ones tent all day, in the middle of nowhere, in pouring rain!

Our Saturday night feast was a little different this year, thanks to the absence of master-fish fryer Bruce Behrens. Instead Joel and Mike Smalley sauteed (or pan-fried) the fish in skillets on the stove. Prior to dinner, we were treated to Greg Corbutt's outstanding h'dourves of grilled oysters on the half shell. Russell also made some redfish on the half shell. And to top it off, Doby brought some homemade cream pies for dessert.

Sunday was beautiful, but with high winds, so everyone was packed and on their way home by 9:30.. Although the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally was going on at the same time, it didn't cause any delays. One poor cyclist did have a pretty serious accident right in front of our subdivision Sunday morning.

Despite not being the usual meathaul, it was still a most enjoyable weekend, and we look forward to next year.

Joel
