Barry S and I made an afternoon trip to Jones Bay yesterday. Launched from Louie's around 1PM and paddled out toward the bay. We made a side trip into the marsh just past the railroad bridge and didn't see much activity other than some mullet in the deeper water. We worked over the bait but didn't pick up anything. We then paddled on out to the mouth of Highland Bayou into Jones Bay. We saw some bait activity just to the west of the mouth and Barry picked up a couple small reds on a baby n-1. I scored nada on paddle tail jigs and corkys. We decided to paddle down the shoreline in search of more bait. The winds were light and we paddled all the way to the diversion canal. Didn't get any action and decide to return to where Barry first caught his reds. While Barry fished in shallow water, I paddled out to slightly deeper water and worked the reef just into Jones Bay. Once again I scored nada and Barry started catching fish. He waved me over and I continued to be schooled as Barry landed two nice slot reds on a copper spoon. My efforts with multiple lures resulted in zero as Barry clearly had penned up the reds in advance of our trip and proceeded to catch them when my back was turned.... errr not really.... Barry just had the touch today and went home with two nice reds and released a few others including a small flounder. Kudos to Barry for kicking my butt.... but next time I will potlick and bring a couple copper spoons.
