I made a trial run to Salt Lake Saturday morning. The electronic gate has been repaired and opened promptly at 6 am and appears to now be on a timer. No need to arrive any earlier. The bite Saturday however, was a short one. Caught a keeper flounder at 6:30, and nothing else. There was plenty of bait activity on the north shoreline, but couldn't entice any bites on my topwater. Paddled down to the weir, but no luck. Talked to another kayaker who had paddled into the back of Salt Bayou and reported many large reds, but not actively feeding. Too hot to stay past noon so I called it a day. The water was a bit off color but there were mullet everywhere and shrimp popping tight to the cover.
The road into the refuge has a new layer of pavement and there is much work going on at the activity center. The launch area is in good shape as is the parking area. Hope for a slight cool down in the weather between now and the 12th. Look forward to seeing the rest of you there.

Hey wasabiss... watching the rain fall today. Too soon to tell what Saturday brings. Final decision probably wont be made until Friday afternoon. The threat of just rain doesn't usually cancel the trips, but if some sort of tropical system develops or the forecast is for constant heavy rain we will pull the plug. We stay off the water with lightning in the area, so thunderstorms will be a part of our concern for saturday also. Watch the site Friday for further developments.
