Chris A and I, along with my Uncle took advantage of the Bay Flats Lodge Prize won at our tournament to book a two day trip with Captain Chris Martin and team. We were to fish yesterday and today. As with typical PACK luck, the weather conspired with the wind gods to make for a difficult day yesterday and a blow out today, Consequently, I'm here writing this report instead of a second day of fishing.

I must sat Bay Flats Lodge is a first rate outfit. The Lodge is luxurious, the hospitality very warm, and the food was outstanding. Captain Alan West, with whom we fished on Thursday was a real pro. He went above and beyond to try and locate fishable water on a blustery, high pressure day. More on all that later.

We waded the Matagorda shoreline, Pringle, Contee, and several smaller lakes trying to beat the wind. We caught fish in every spot we stopped, but most were undersized trout or rat reds. Chris had the first keeper trout and seemed to have the number on small reds. We were throwing Norton Bull Minnows in morning glory, orange and black, chartreuse and black, and similar color combos. A very long day of wading ultimately produced three keeper trout 15-17" by 4pm. Finally on the last wade of the day, I hooked a nice 25" trout.

We decided to let the weather gods win and cancelled our trip friday and thought about all those folks signed up for Panther Point. Hope you make it ok and the fishing isn't too tough. Friday is going to be a tough day.

I plan to write a more thorough review of the Bay Flats Lodge experience and share some thoughts Captain Martin has about trying to accommodate kayakers. I'll also give a report along with Chris A at the meeting this month.

Sorry to hear about the weather bad luck.  I know you were looking forward to the trip.  Looking forward to hearing about the lodge and future kayaking from there.

Capt.s Alan and Chris worked to put us on fish. Always connected with the other guides on the phone, we went to spots that always looked fishy one way or the other. I think we hooked up at each location, it was tough to find keepers. It got real exciting when Ron hooked and landed his 25" Speck (yes, this posting is nearly worthless without photo's) Hang on, they're coming.  I can't say enough about Bay Flat's Lodge. We were treated like kings and I felt it. But, then I was sleeping by 9 on Thursday, that all day wading wore my @$$ out! Chris

Sound's like it was a fun trip! Ken, Bruce, Craig, and myself had had some great trips at BFL over the past couple of years. Chris, runs a great lodge and it's accommodations are extraordinarily nice. The dinner's at the lodge are excellent.  I'm glad you guys got into the fish before the front.

Tight Lines,
