Went out to South Deer Island/Confederate Reef yesterday afternoon. Launched around 2:00pm with a light north wind, very low tide and water clear to 3 feet, I headed for the deep guts around South Deer Island. Armed with my new favorite bait (WhoDat colored Hackberry Hustler) I started working the deep guts. The fish were not deep. I started drifting towards Confederate and once I got into about 2 to 3 feet of water fish on, nineteen inch red. Went back around and set up another drift towards the same area. First cast fish on, a solid three lb. trout. Made several more drifts resulting in more trout up to 4 lbs. All fish were released. I'm very impressed with these Hackberry Hustlers. This was the same bait I was throwing in Aransas Pass several weeks ago and caught probably 30-40 fish on it. I still had the same one tied on yesterday and it is still in pretty good shape. I'm going to see if I can get through another trip with the same bait. These baits are tough! For those of you coming on the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge trip January 15th, I'll bring some extras and show you some of the techniques I've been using.

Yesterdays Stats

Incoming Tide
Clear Skies
Temperature 48ºF
Water Temp: 49.9ºF

Good job... thanks for the detail. I agree that the hustlers are plenty tough and it is interesting that you found them productive in this habitat. That who dat must be great in the clear water.
