PANTHER POINT – PACKTX OCTOBER 2012

The PACKTX group made their annual camping/fishing trip to Panther Point on October 19-12, 2012. Last year included lots of excitement from the weather and storms but this year had sunshine and good weather. The group of 11 anxious fishermen left Fulton Harbor on the Skimmer on Friday around 10am for the 1 hour trip to Panther Point. Two additional PACKTX members arrived later in the day via their powerboat. Windy conditions met the group but the winds were not high enough to hamper the trip or any activities. Everyone set up camp and then headed out for an afternoon of fishing. The mostly south and east winds were tolerable since the camp position and Matagorda island provided some shelter from the winds. Most of the group returned Friday evening with fish or reports of fish caught and released. Enough fish were caught on Friday to provide most of the fish needed for the planned Saturday night fish fry. No group meal was planned on Friday so everyone fixed their own supper and then spent the evening talking and star watching.

Saturday morning brought calm winds and a good weather forecast for the day. Fishermen went in all directions in the morning with instructions to be back by 7pm for a group fish fry. The group this year included several fly fishermen along with the normal mix of baitcasting and spinning guys. Fish were caught during the day, mainly along the main shoreline. The marsh areas provided a lesser number of fish this year. Saturday night was highlighted by a group fish fry orchestrated by Bruce Behrens. The menu included fried fish, fried potatoes, fixings and apple/cherry pie. No one left hungry! Many thanks to Bruce for organizing the fish fry and others for helping prepare the meal and bringing equipment for the event.

Sunday morning was a day for fishing for some and a day for late sleeping and camp activities for others. The Skimmer was scheduled for a noon pickup at the island. Most of the fish on Sunday were trout and were caught while casting along the main shoreline about 50-200’ from the bank. The Skimmer picked up the group at noon and returned everyone safely to Fulton Harbor. Overall, a very good trip to Panther Point and definitely a return trip next year.
