Gentlemen,
I would really appreciate your input to help me on this decision. I have been to two meetings so far and met a few of you. Have not yet been able to make a PACK Trip. I am fairly new to kayak fishing. Late last summer I purchased an OK Scrambler XT 12, which I have had our in the bay a few times. I plan to do both bay and BTB and understand the two ideally require different kayaks. I have a 14 year old son who loves fishing as much as I do, so about to pull the trigger on a second kayak. We have paddled a variety at demo days and really like the OK line and have read many positives on them for BTB. Hoever, that is on a flat pond and I have not yet paddled in the surf, and am not easily able to test paddle there. I wont really know till I do more of both, but my guess at present is for the next year at least I will do more bay than BTB. However as I and my son get more experience and out BTB that could shift. However, for safety reasons, especially for him, I dont want to take him BTB until I have done it at least a few times to learn so I can then teach and help him. Long way of saying, long term I am not sure where the most fishing will occur, but want something safe and serviceable for both. I am currently looking at pretty good deals on both an unused 2015 Ultra 4.3 and a Trident 13 (think it is 2015 but awaiting confirmation). From a BTB standpoint which would you recommend and why? Same question for bay and freshwater fishing. It seems from all I have read the hulls are very similar. So any input on your experience with these would be helpful, Also, FWIW, I am 6'2", 195 and my son is a rapidly growing 6', 155.
Thanks for your assistance,
Tom

I can't comment on the Ultra but I started off kayaking and kayak fishing with a Trident 13. It was to me a very good starting kayak but I only used it in the Bays so couldn't say in regards to how serviceable it would be BTB. The Trident 13 was a good dependable kayak and paddled well in it use. Just from my personal experience I don't think I would feel good in the trident 13 as a BTB kayak at least not without a lot of experience in it. For me though I seemed to find it a bit on the tippy side being a beginner so I eventually moved to an Outback and currently have a Tarpon 140, Jackson Superfishal and an Outback. If your still not sure its possible you might be able to rent one or both from either FTU or ACK for the weekend and give them a thorough test. You also might want to look over at the TKF Forums and search for either kayak. I know at one time a few years back the Ultra's seemed to be very good kayaks for BTB and Bay Fishing.
