The PACKTX group met on Tuesday night, February 15th at the REI store on Westheimer. Attendance for the night was approximately 45 folks. Agenda consisted of:

Introduction of visitors and new members.

Previews of upcoming trips. The next trips on the schedule are:
Fayette County Lake (Feb 25-27)
Powderhorn Lake (March 11-13)
Sargent (March 26).
See the website www.packtx.org for more details and any updates.

Next month’s meeting is scheduled for March 15 and the speaker is Marcos Enriquez.

We’re still looking for trip leaders for a couple of the 2011 trips. If you’re interested and would like to be a trip leader, contact Ron Romeis or Michael Harris.

Several members told about their recent fishing trips and also reviewed the recent PACKTX trip to Kemah / Seabrook Flats.

Chris Arceneaux gave a safety presentation on kayak re-entry with a paddle float.

Chris Busch gave a presentation on leaders and knots for use with leaders. Ron Romeis mentioned that bassfishin.com has a lot of informational tips and videos. Be sure to watch the one on getting rid of backlashes on baitcasting reels.

The speakers for the night were Vincent Rinando, Sam Rinando and Jeff Herman from Team Ocean Kayak. The guys were great to listen to and gave out lots of useful fishing information, particularly for this time of year.

1 – Patterns. Be aware of what is working and what is not working. Talk to other fisherman and stay alert while on the water. Keep a journal to help keep track of times, tides, water clarity, baits, location, etc. Refer back to this information when planning your next trip.

2 – Fishing structure may be good now. Any item that can gather and keep heat will be a fish attractor (piers, bulkheads, etc.).

3 – When the days warm up, fishing in shallow locations that are near deeper areas can be good (drains, flats near the Intracoastal).

4 - Full moons usually mean stronger tides and possibly a mid-day bite.

5 – Match the bait. Try to mimic the size and type bait that is seen in the water.

6 – Watch for crab traps; can be an indicator of structure or bottom contour change.

7 – Be willing to try new areas. Use Google Earth, maps, books, exploration trips and any other way to find new spots.
