This past weekend, 23 PACK members (Paddling Anglers in Canoes and Kayaks) led by Dennis Loving aka. Spuds, traveled to the Mid Matagorda Island bay shoreline of Panther Point, made famous by Rudy Grigar, "Plugger" in his book by the same name for a three day weekend of camping, fishing, and kayaking.  Ten of the members left from the Fulton Marina on the tour boat "Skimmer" piloted by the Capt. Tommy Moore. The rest ferried their kayaks and gear from Charlies Bait Camp in power boats, one being Dick & Lisa's well-known "Grocery Skiff". Campsites were quickly established and the fishing started Friday afternoon.

Literally hundreds of fish were caught.  Trout of mixed sizes were located just about everywhere.  Reds were found in the back canals and up against the grassy shoreline. Several 28" reds were landed.

Attendees returned with their catches Friday night to Dick McGonigle's outstanding marinaded steak and chicken fajitas and margaritas on the rocks.

Saturday was a repeat of Friday, with fish being taken by everyone.  Spuds and his son, Spuds Jr. caught almost identical 23" trout.

Everyone returned Saturday evening tired and hungry and were greeted to Team Hurricane's "Tiki Island."  Several tiki torches, Fubar's solar powered party lights, and the warmth of a glowing campfire set "the mood" for that night's dinner.  Spuds' homemade shrimp and crab gumbo was supplemented by generous donations of fresh chunks of redfish, trout and flounder that were swimming only hours prior.  After filling up on gumbo, everyone was treated to Spuds', dutch-oven cobbler.  As everyone kicked back, digested their food, and reflected on their day, Fubar provided a mini fireworks display to wrap up the evening.

Here are some comments from some of the attendees:

"I really wasn't keeping count of the fish I caught but can say I did catch a significant number of reds although most of them were undersized.  Also, I caught at least a dozen small trout and a large black drum."

"I managed to hang on to some ice and was able to bring some redfish home.  My wife and I cooked it up last night and it was super.  Nothing like fresh redfish and a good bottle of wine. However, the events of the trip for me were the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Thanks again for your work putting the trip together."

"Great trip!"

"The mini fireworks show was the coup de gras of the weekend!"

This has been one of PACK's premier trips and unlike a lot of PACK trips, the weather seems to cooperate for this overnighter. This one was the best one yet, that I have been on.   However, we did miss some of the "regulars" and you know who you are!

All in all it was a grand weekend, biting bugs were non-existent, temperatures were perfect, and every sunrise and sunset was just spectacular.

Spuds.
